The Nordbahnhof Campus
Urban, Green, and Abounding with Shared Spaces
A new Bildungscampus+ (educational campus) has emerged on the former Nordbahnhof area in the Leopoldstadt district, specifically at Taborstraße 120. The new complex encompasses a 16-group kindergarten, a 22-class all-day elementary school, a 20-class New Secondary School, as well as a vocational secondary school with two classes and rooms for special education and music school. The campus is complemented by a spacious and attractive open space concept suitable for all age groups. "This campus is also being built according to the 'Campus+' model, with primary school classes and kindergarten groups sharing educational areas, which allows children to learn together and from each other," emphasizes Education Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky.
The Nordbahnhof Campus was designed by the architectural firm Klammer Zeleny ZT GmbH. Vasko+Partner is responsible for the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) consultancy as well as the PPP execution. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Michael Ludwig mentioned Vasko+Partner as one of the most reliable partners of the city - the first campus at Nordbahnhof, the Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner Campus, was also developed under the guidance of Vasko+Partner. The PPP contract includes the support of further planning from the submission, construction, and financing stages, as well as the long-term availability of the building and additional services.
Through an EU-wide negotiated procedure, the consortium consisting of Siemens Gebäudemanagement & -Services GmbH, Bauunternehmung Granit Gesellschaft m.b.H., and RBI Leasing Ges.m.b.H emerged as the most suitable PPP contractor. The campus is set to begin operations in 2020.
Distinctive Structure
Covering approximately 28,000 square meters of gross floor area, the new educational campus integrates into the surrounding urban structures and presents itself as a differentiated building within its new environment. The school building's main entrance faces the traffic-calmed part of Taborstraße and the "new center." The campus forecourt not only serves as an access area but is also open for use by local residents. The three-armed structure of the building ("the Campus Flower") makes it manageable while still providing urban value. The building's design is clear and straightforward: The three building arms, or "petals," house the educational areas, which are interwoven through the shared functions, or the "stem." The basic principle of the open space design follows the idea that each area offers different outdoor spaces tailored to its main user group. Most of the outdoor areas are directly accessible through multiple exits. All primary colors are aligned with the architecture's color concept. The outdoor area spans over 4,000 square meters.
The nine individual educational areas ("Beavers") are distributed across three levels and are divided into age-specific usage groups (e.g., Beavers from kindergarten groups, pre-school and primary school, and Beavers from the New Secondary School and vocational secondary school):
- Three toddler groups
- Area for special education
- Music school
- Shared functions for education and care, including the sports area, event hall, creative area, and therapy area
- Shared administrative areas, including campus administration, central warming kitchen, and facilities for facility management (FM)
- Outdoor facilities with various age-appropriate play areas
