Konrad Lorenz Institute

In June 2011, the Konrad Lorenz Foundation acquired the elongated Baroque palace on the Lower Stadtplatz in Klosterneuburg and decided on a renovation and extension according to the plans of architect W. Grohe, who was also responsible for the artistic supervision of the project.

The extension houses workspaces for scientific staff as well as event areas. A glass-covered canopy, designed as a light and airy structure, connects the old building with the extension. On the north facade, former door openings were reinstated to create a connection to the new addition. The architects proposed a sensitive adaptation that returned the partially inconsistent interior design of the main floor (doors, floors, baseboards, color scheme) to more authentic details. The impressive brick vaults of the former wine cellar were made accessible to visitors as an entrance to the event area. The building is listed as a historical monument, and the design was thoroughly discussed in advance with the Heritage Office and the City of Klosterneuburg, both of which approved the new use of the building.
