Tower VIE
Tower VIE
The Tower VIE project (Air Traffic Control Center including Control Tower) represents the technical heart of air traffic control. With a height of approximately 108 meters, the air traffic control tower can also be considered as the new landmark for Vienna Airport, owing to its distinctive identity and unique appearance. The Tower VIE project follows the concept of dividing the structure into a base, a shaft, and a head building. The available building lines for the base structure were implemented while ensuring the optimal viewing direction for the air traffic control center. This was achieved by approximately 45 degrees rotation of the rectangular base in relation to the rounded head. Moreover, the execution of an eccentric shaft, providing a varying view from every angle, is a special feature of this project. A translucent membrane was stretched between the base and head structures, dynamically interpreting the form transition between the two parts and allowing for projections.
Technically, multiple redundant systems were employed to ensure continuous operation of air traffic control in case of disruptions or failures in any individual system.
Scope of Services: Austrocontrol entrusted Vasko+Partner with the accompanying monitoring.
Vasko+Partner was best suited to carry out the accompanying monitoring of this project due to its interdisciplinary office structure (all required competencies under one roof). This ensures that safety and data protection aspects are well-preserved by having only one party involved, without the need to engage further specialists in specific planning and execution topics. Vasko+Partner is capable of covering all aspects of project management with its own core personnel, without relying on additional specialists.
